James Gunn says Guardians 3 was “Torture”

Director James Gunn says filming was more challenging than usual for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The production of Guardians 3 has been ongoing for some time. Six years after the release of Volume 2, in May of 2022, Volume 3 will be made available to readers. Were we happy with the outcome? That is the $1,000,000 question.

Both Pom Klementieff (Mantis) and Karen Gillian (Nebula) sobbed when they read the script for Vol. 3. James Gunn’s performance was James’ “strongest effort ever,” according to Gillian.

All aspects of production, not just the script, are likely to be emotionally fraught, given that this is Gunn’s last project with the Guardians of the Galaxy ensemble.

The Making of Volume 3: An Interview with James Gunn

James Gunn, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, spoke about his involvement in the development of both Vol. 3 and the upcoming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

It was simple for the director to write, film, and cast the Holiday Special, but he said it was a “pain” to make his next threequel. Producing was difficult for obvious reasons.

“Let me be completely forthright: I penned the script in hours; the words poured out. This was a simple task. The whole process of filming went smoothly. Vol. 1 and 2 were breezes in terms of coaxing performances from the actors, whereas Vol. 3 was a nightmare. Thus, it appeared as if we were constantly switching between the two. It was a lot of fun, not to mention simple, and the results showed up right away.”

Post-production on Vol. 3 is “fantastic,” Gunn said when asked about it, adding that he is “still [working on] a tonne of visual effects” and “putting the soundtrack together:”

“Great. Wow, it works out well,

The special is so off-the-wall and outrageous that the movie is a complete 180 compared to it. While the film is very moving, it has been a pleasure to create. Therefore, progress is excellent. There is a tonne of VFX shots that I still have to complete, in addition to the mammoth task of composing the film’s music alongside John Murphy. That’s why I’ve been concentrating so intently on those topics recently.”

The Holiday Special and Volume 3 are described by Gunn as “very, very different” and “very, very emotional” on the Phase Zero podcast.

The Christmas Special is not the same as Volume 3. It’s hard to find words to describe how profoundly emotional Vol. 3 is. It reveals the backstory of Rocket, his relationships with other characters, and the fate of the Guardians. Flying out of the country every four days for eight days to film scenes for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in the works.

Whiplash is a genuine possibility with such frequent jolts. Indeed, the snow days shown in the Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas special were natural. During their break, they decided to get some air outside. It was great fun, so thank you.

Are you sick of movies that older adults created?

Don’t join forces with others who share your disgust for his views. Given the challenges of any production, Gunn’s comment that it was a “pain in every aspect” is not surprising.

As the conclusion of Gunn’s trilogy, it’s sure to be emotionally draining, and that’s before we even get to the mountain of work that goes into producing some of the most costly movies ever.

After months of hard labor, the cast and crew deserved a respite for the Holiday Special. Completing the third installment and the third volume of the Epcot experience would be a monumental task.

Even though Gunn departs Marvel Studios at the end of Vol. 3, his duties will grow. Co-running the DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) at Warner Bros. with Peter Safran, where he has complete creative control over all DCU productions and produces his films and TV shows.

On November 25, Netflix will debut a holiday-themed Guardians of the Galaxy special, and on May 5, 2023, fans may purchase the third volume in the series.
