When Calls the Heart is an American drama series based on the book of the same name by Janette Oke, which is part of her Canadian West series. The show was created by Michael Landon Jr. The first episode of the show aired on January 11, 2014, on the Hallmark Channel in the United States, and on April 16, 2014, on Super Channel in Canada.

In October 2013, a two-hour TV movie pilot with Maggie Grace as young teacher Elizabeth Thatcher and Stephen Amell as Royal North-West Mounted Police officer Wynn Delaney was the start of the series. Erin Krakow plays the main character in the TV show, which has a large cast.

Hallmark picked up the show for a sixth season on March 21, 2018. The season started with a two-hour Christmas special that was shown as part of Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas. Starting in February 2019, the season was supposed to continue with 10 more episodes. But because of the 2019 college admissions scandal involving Loughlin and her subsequent removal from all Hallmark properties, the season was put on hold for “retooling,” and Loughlin’s scenes were cut out when it came back in May and ended in June.

When Calls the Heart Plot

In When Calls the Heart, Erin Krakow plays Elizabeth Thatcher, a young teacher who is used to living a high-class life. She will be teaching for the first time in Coal Valley, a small coal-mining town in Western Canada just south of Robb, Alberta. There, life is simple, but there are often hard things to deal with. Most people in Coal Valley are charmed by Elizabeth, but the Royal North-West Mounted Police Constable Jack Thornton is not one of them (Daniel Lissing). He thinks Thatcher’s rich father has ruined the lawman’s career by sending him to town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Elizabeth must learn the ways of the Canadian frontier if she wants to do well in this coal town in 1910.

Abigail Stanton’s (Lori Loughlin) husband, who was the mine’s foreman, and her only son, along with 45 other miners, were killed in an explosion caused by the carelessness and lack of responsibility of the mine’s site manager. When the recently widowed women have to go to work in the mine to keep a roof over their heads, food on the table, and help pay the teacher’s salary, their faith is put to the test. After the coal mine closed, the town of Coal Valley has renamed Hope Valley in the first episode of the second season.
