According to her talent agency, APA, Helmond passed away on February 23, 2019, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease-related complications. She was a seven-time Emmy-nominated actress hailing from Galveston, Texas.

Playing Helmond’s granddaughter on “Who’s the Boss,” Alyssa Milano paid tribute to her on Twitter, calling her a “beautiful, kind, funny, gracious, compassionate, rock.”

“You were an instrumental part of my life. You taught me to hold my head above the marsh! You taught me to do anything for a laugh! What an example you were,” Milano added.

“Everybody Loves Raymond” (CBS) and ABC’s “Coach” (ABC) both featured Helmond in recurring roles.

Nominated for a Tony and winning two Golden Globes, she played the lead in “The Great God Brown.”

Her spouse, David Christian, spoke out in an interview with Variety, confirming her passing.

“She was the love of my life,” Christian said. “We spent 57 beautiful, wonderful, loving years together, which I will treasure forever. I’ve been with Katherine since I was 19 years old. The night she died, I saw that the moon was exactly half-full, just as I am now … half of what I’ve been my entire adult life.”

Long before Katherine Helmond became famous, in 1957, she wed her lover George N. Martin. They were only married for five years before filing for a divorce in 1962, thus it was a short marriage.

David Christian, with whom she began dating that year, became her husband. None of her marriages resulted in a child for her.

Katherine believed in living a peaceful and composed existence and was a dedicated follower of the Zen way of life. As she put it, it was a lifesaver during the highs and lows of her acting career.
