Reiner passed away on June 29, 2020, at his Beverly Hills, California, residence, at the age of 98.

According to his assistant Judy Nagy, Reiner passed away from natural causes.

Upon hearing of his passing, tributes began to stream in.

He was Steve Martin’s “greatest mentor in movies and in life,” and Martin tweeted his goodbyes.

“Thank you, dear Carl.”

“His kindness and decency leaves a hole in our hearts,” actor Alan Alda tweeted, adding, “his talent will live on for a long time.”

“His humanity was beyond compare,” Sarah Silverman remarked.

“Last night my dad passed away,” Rob wrote on Twitter. “As I write this my heart is hurting. He was my guiding light.”

The writer, producer, actor, and director recently celebrated close friend and fellow entertainment icon Mel Brooks’ 94th birthday, as shown in photos posted by the latter’s manager, George Shapiro. The comedians were also supporting Black Lives Matter, as seen on their shirts. (Reiner’s comedy work with Brooks started while working with comedian Sid Caesar.)

Estelle Reiner was married to Carl Reiner; who was she?

A native of the Bronx, Estelle Lebost gave birth to Estelle Reiner in 1914. She began her career in the Catskills, a vibrant center for Jewish artists, where she was raised as a Jew. Carl Reiner and Estelle Lebost met at a performance while Lebost was working as a set designer in the Catskills. In 1943, they tied the knot.

Though she only appeared in films sometimes, Estelle Reiner had a successful career in her own right. The films Fatso (co-starring Dom DeLuise), Hot to Trot (co-starring Bobcat Goldthwaite), and When Harry Met Sally—many consider her “breakthrough” performance as the elderly woman client in the notorious orgasm scene—are her most notable works.
