Professional Career of Angie Stone

Angie Stone formed The Sequence, a female hip-hop trio, with Gwendolyn “Blondie” Chisolm and Cheryl “The Pearl” Cook when she was sixteen years old in the late 1970s. They were the second rap group signed to Sugar Hill Records, having tried out onstage for manager Sylvia Robinson after a Sugar Hill Gang show in South Carolina.

The Sequence’s famous song “Funk You Up,” which peaked at number 15 on the US Top Black Singles chart in 1980, helped them reach success. As the first female rap group to do so, the trio enjoyed several more hits in the early years of hip-hop.

As they went on a lengthy tour and performed songs like “Funky Sound (Tear The Roof Off)” and “Monster Jam,” which featured rapper Spoonie Gee, Robinson served as their coach. But as hip hop evolved from its party roots to become a more sober type of street art, the group lost popularity and finally broke up in 1985.
