Bertinelli was born in Wilmington, Delaware, to General Motors executive Andrew Bertinelli and Nancy Carvin, whose maiden name was Carvin. Her father comes from Italy, and her mother comes from England.  David, Patrick, and Drew are her brothers. Mark, her older brother, was accidentally poisoned when he was 17 months old and died before she was born.

Due to her father’s job, the family moved around a lot. At different times, they lived in Claymont, Delaware, Clarkston, Michigan, Shreveport, Louisiana, Oklahoma City, and the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, where Bertinelli studied acting at the Tami Lynn School of Artists.
