At the age of sixty-two, country music artist Toby Keith passed away on Monday night, February 5, more than two years after suffering a stomach cancer diagnosis.

Keith revealed on X in June 2022 that he had been diagnosed in the fall of 2021 and had already undergone surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Then, in June of last year, he reported to Oklahoma City’s The Oklahoman newspaper that his tumor had decreased by one-third and that he was still receiving chemotherapy.

He added that he also underwent immunotherapy, which is a medication that stimulates the immune system to eliminate cancer cells.

Since his passing, medical professionals have urged people to be aware of the warning indications of stomach cancer, which include nausea, ulcers, heartburn, acid reflux, anemia, pain after eating, abrupt weight loss, and feeling full after consuming little amounts of food.

When Keith accepted the Country Icon Awards at the first-ever People’s Choice Country Awards at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on September 28, 2023, he provided an update on his health.

At the time, Toby told E! News, “I feel pretty good.” It resembles a roller coaster in specific ways. On your good days, you’re up and down, up and dressed. I feel acceptable today, even if it’s usually zero to sixty and sixty to zero.

At that point, Keith said, his tumor had shrunk to around one-third of its original size. As part of his performance, he sang “Don’t Let the Old Man In” from the Clint Eastwood film “The Mule.”

“I’ve been going through my cancer fight for the last couple of years, and it’s really inspiring for a lot of people,” he said during NBC’s pre-show event. “And coming back on TV for the first time and performing live in front of a live audience, I thought it was fitting.”

On December 10, 11, and 14, 2023, Keith played three sold-out shows in Las Vegas. These were his final performances.

In a video promoting the events, he said, “They’re kind of rehab shows, get the band back in sync, get me rolling again.” It’s the first time in my life that I’ve taken more than two years off. In my whole life, I have never taken a year off.

“The old devil’s been after me a little bit through COVID and cancer,” he continued. “I’ve got him by the horns right now, so instead of just sitting around and waiting, we’re going to get the band back together.”
