Jenkins was born Sanela Dijana Catic in 1973 to a middle-class family in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Yugoslavia. Her parents were both employed; her father worked as an economist and her mother as an auditor. While studying in Sarajevo in 1992, she was compelled to flee the country owing to the violence. She was a refugee in Croatia for a year before relocating to London. At the age of 21, her brother was purportedly assassinated by Serb forces.
After two years, she was able to continue her studies at City University in London. She earned a bachelor’s degree in science with honors in Economics and Computer Science. Jenkins was awarded permanent citizenship and acknowledged for her work ethic as a result of her outstanding academic achievements.

Sanela Diana Jenkins is a philanthropist that is very involved in the community. She has given and assisted in the fundraising of millions of dollars for a range of organizations that support a variety of causes.
In memory of Iris Catic, she created the Sanela Diana Jenkins Foundation for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2002. It is said to be Bosnia’s largest privately funded philanthropic organization.
She went on to start the Sanela Diana Jenkins Human Rights Project at the University of California six years later.
Her Jenkins-Penn Haitian Relief Organization offered medical assistance to thousands of earthquake victims in Haiti in 2010. Jenkins and Sean Penn collaborated on the project. She’s also coordinated Elton John’s AIDS Foundation fundraisers. She also secured bail for former Bosnian President EjupGani, who was arrested in the United Kingdom when Serbia requested his extradition.
