James Alan Hetfield was born in Downey, California, on August 3, 1963. His father drove a truck while his mother was an opera singer. At the age of 13, he saw the separation of his parents.

His mother was dying of cancer, but the family was such devout Christian Scientists that they refused to use modern medicine.
