Murray joined UC Berkeley School of Law in 2006 and received tenure in 2011. She and Ashira Ostrow won the 2012 Association of American Law Schools Scholarly Papers Competition for their work “Marriage as Punishment.”
Murray’s thesis argues that “marriage has played a critical role in the operation of the criminal justice system, including serving as a defense to crime and as a form of punishment.”
The following year, her paper “What’s So New About the New Illegitimacy?” won the Dukeminier Awards’ Michael Cunningham Prize for outstanding sexual orientation and gender identity legal review article of 2012.
Murray, a full professor at UC Berkeley, received the 2014 Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction, which “honors a professor who has shown an outstanding commitment to teaching and who is an inspiration to students.”
Next year, she became faculty director of the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice (CRRJ), the US’s first law school think tank on reproductive rights and justice. She co-wrote “Cases on Reproductive Rights and Justice,” the first casebook.
Murray became interim dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law on March 22, 2016, when Sujit Choudhry resigned. Murray left UC Berkeley on June 11, 2018, to become a tenured academic member at New York University and Birnbaum Women’s Leadership Network co-director.
Murray warned the Senate Judiciary that Brett Kavanaugh would overturn Roe v. Wade during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing on September 7, 2018.
Murray was on the Brennan Center for Justice, American Constitution Society, Guttmacher Institute, and National Women’s Law Center boards and a member of the American Law Institute.
