Early life, education and military service

On April 22, 1937, in Neptune City, New Jersey, Nicholson was born to June Frances Nicholson (June Nilson; 1918–1963). Her mother was Irish, English, German, and Welsh. “I’m not saying I’m as dark as he was… but I am a writer, I am Irish, and I have had problems with my family,” Nicholson said in Reds, comparing himself to playwright Eugene O’Neill. [8] His mother married Italian-American showman Donald Rose (1909–1997) in 1936, unaware he was already married. In his book Jack’s Life, Patrick McGilligan speculates that June’s manager, Eddie King (formerly Edgar A. Kirschfeld), was Nicholson’s biological father rather than Furcillo. June Nicholson may have been unsure about her father’s identity. [6] Because June was only seventeen and unmarried, her parents decided to raise Nicholson as their own kid and treat her as his sister. Time magazine researchers discovered in 1974 that June was Nicholson’s mother and Lorraine was his aunt. His mother and grandmother had perished by then (in 1963 and 1970, respectively). When Nicholson found out, he claimed it was “a dramatic event, but not traumatising… I was well psychologically constituted”.

Nicholson is from Neptune. His mother’s church reared him. His family moved to Spring Lake, NJ, before he started high school. … When Jack was ready for high school, the family relocated two miles south to Spring Lake, New Jersey’s Irish Riviera, where his grandmother Ethel May opened her beauty business at 505 Mercer Avenue. “Nick” attended adjacent Manasquan High School, where he was voted “Class Clown” by the Class of 1954. He spent an entire school year in detention. His name is on a school theatre and a theatrical prize. Nicholson attended his 50th high school reunion in 2004 with his aunt Lorraine.

In 1957, Nicholson joined the California Air National Guard, an effort to “dodge the draught”; the Military Selective Service Act of the Korean War era still required draftees to serve up to two years active duty. Nickolson served as a firefighter for the Van Nuys Airport Fire Department after finishing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. Nicholson was called up for extended active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961, and he was discharged in 1962.
