Howard Stern Early Life:

New York City’s Howard Allan Stern was born on January 12th, 1954, in the Queens borough of Jackson Heights. Ray, his mother, worked as a New York City office secretary. His father was a radio engineer at WHOM in Manhattan after serving in the Army during World War II. Co-owner of Aura Recording Inc., a Manhattan recording studio where commercials and cartoons were recorded, he was also a member of the board of directors there. Ellen, Howard’s older sister, is also a member of the family.

Stern’s family relocated to Long Island, New York, when he was one year old. Stern’s dream of working on radio began when he was just five years old. When Stern was a kid growing up in Roosevelt, New York, his father built him a makeshift recording studio in the basement where he could record imaginary radio shows. Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School was where he went to school. Stern’s family relocated to Rockville Center, New York, when he was 15 years old. Howard Stern began his career as a radio announcer in 1979, when he worked as a morning DJ for Radio & Records at WWWW, a commercial FM radio station. His efforts were rewarded with immediate industry acclaim when he was named Personality of the Year by Billboard.

Stern relocated to a radio station in Washington, DC, where he began planning a new show. Stern was given a one-year deal by WWDC, but he eventually chose to go with WNBC in 1982.
