Gentleman Jack, a period drama written by Sally Wainwright, will not get a third season on HBO. The news comes a little more than a month after Season 2 of the show, which was made in partnership with the BBC, ended on HBO. Gentleman Jack aired on HBO on a Monday night when there weren’t as many people watching. Its second season was delayed because of the pandemic, and it was one of HBO’s lower-rated original shows.

Gentleman Jack is based on the real-life diaries of Anne Lister. Suranne Jones plays Anne Lister, and Sophie Rundle plays Ann Walker. In Season 2 of the show, Anne and Ann move in together as husband and wife to Shibden Hall from Lookout Point. They want to combine their estates and become a power couple.

In a statement to Deadline, HBO said that there will not be a third season of Gentleman Jack. “When we started this journey more than five years ago, we knew that the show’s creator, Sally Wainwright, had a very interesting idea, and it’s been very exciting to see how viewers have connected with Anne Lister’s journey.

We are so thankful to Sally, Suranne Jones, Sophie Rundle, and the rest of the cast and crew for making Anne and Ann’s story come to life. We’d also like to thank our partners at BBC and Lookout Point for working with us on two great seasons.”

Season 2 started on HBO three years after Season 1 did. Sally Wainwright, Suranne Jones, Faith Penhale, Will Johnston, and Ben Irving were the show’s executive producers. Producers were Phil Collinson and Stella Merz, and directors were Edward Hall, Amanda Brotchie, and Fergus O’Brien. Lookout Point put it together for HBO and BBC One.
