In East Orange, New Jersey, Marie Dionne Warrick—later known as Warwick—was born to Lee Drinkard and Mancel Warrick. Her father was a certified public accountant, record promoter, and cook at the Pullman, while her mother was the manager of the Drinkard Singers.

Her brother, Mancel Jr., was killed in a vehicle accident in 1968 when he was 21 years old, and her sister, Delia (“Dee Dee”), died in 2008. The original Drinkard Jubilairs, Cissy, Anne, Larry, Nicky, and Hansom, were joined by Warwick’s great-grandparents, Nicholas and Delia Drinkard, and their offspring, Hansom, Lee, and William, the last being Warwick’s mother.

As the band gained notoriety, Lee and Marie joined, along with pop/R&B vocalist Judy Clay, whom Lee had kind of adopted. Later on, Elvis Presley expressed interest in including them in his touring group. When Dionne was a young girl, she sang at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where she first heard gospel music.
