In the 2006 NFL Draft, Ryans was selected by the Houston Texans with the 33rd overall pick. Then, against all odds, Ryans began the season as a middle linebacker, beginning a pattern that would continue for the remainder of his playing career. During his debut season, he racked up 3.5 sacks, one interception, and 126 solo tackles.
Out of his nine NFL seasons, statistically speaking, he would have had his best season. After ranking second in the league in tackles, Ryans won the 2006 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Ryans made his first team as an All-Pro linebacker and was selected to his first Pro Bowl in his second season.
