Darktide Confirmed Release Date Status, Trailer And Everything We Know In 2022!

Developer Fatshark announced Warhammer 40,000: Darktide in July 2020, supposedly after hordes of grimdark gamers asked the Swedish studio to make a 40k-themed version of 2018’s Vermintide 2. Since then, the game has only looked better.

We hadn’t been this excited about a Warhammer 40K videogame in a long time, with the possible exception of the then-unreleased turn-based strategy battler Warhammer 40k Battlesector, which turned out to be flawed but very playable when we reviewed it.

It’s billed as another four-player co-op action extravaganza, taking Vermintide’s extremely successful hack-and-slash melee combat, adding some classic 40K ranged weapons, and dumping you into the remarkably scary-looking, dark bowels of a Chaos-infested hive city to survive (and, hopefully, bring the light of the God-Emperor to some heretics).

With Vermintide 2, Fatshark demonstrated its ability to create an atmospheric, lore-accurate Warhammer universe and combine it with best-in-class first-person slasher gameplay, resulting in one of the best Warhammer fantasy videogames of all time.

Now, the 40K community excitedly awaits to see if Darktide can accomplish the same trick for Games Workshop’s premier science fiction setting, and so far… well, it’s looking quite nice.

Here is everything we know about Darktide for Warhammer 40K.

Warhammer 40k Darktide Release Date Details

Since FatShark said in July 2021 that the game would be delayed, people thought that Warhammer 40K: Darktide would come out in the spring of 2022. But, on March 31, 2022, it was announced that the release date would be September 13, 2022.

What Is The Story Of Darktide?

Compared to other 40K games, not much has been said about the story of Darktide. We do know that Black Library legend Dan Abnett will write the story, so we can expect his unique mix of humor and darkness.

The story will be about a group of Inquisitorial Agents who are looking into a possible Chaos invasion of Teritum’s Hive City. We should be able to expect characters that are a good mix of Gaunt and Eisenhorn.

Fatshark is doing something interesting by not giving players all of the story missions at once. Instead, they will be given weekly missions that add to the story.

Darktide Co-Op, Multiplayer

On its website, Fatshark said that it would focus a lot on co-op, but it hasn’t said much about how that will work.

Based on how well Vermintide 2 did, it’s a safe bet that Darktide will play the same way. With the option to add AI or real friends to your squad, you can then take your four-person Imperial killing machine straight into the heart of the enemy forces.

Warhammer 40k Darktide Cast Details

From the most recent “writer reveal” trailer, we now know that the player starts the game as a prisoner (taking a page from The Elder Scrolls, are we, Fatshark?) But then the Inquisition, a secretive and very powerful part of the Imperium of Man, hires him.

A screenshot from Warhammer 40K: Darktide shows the team of playable characters, which includes guardsmen and an Ogryn.

Even though the original teaser trailer made it clear that the poor all-guardsman team got killed (RIP, faulty torch guy), the official gameplay trailer in December showed what look to be our four starting player characters:

  • A zealous-looking inquisitorial acolyte type with a bowl cut, a power hammer, and a scroll down their front
  • An Imperial Guard stormtrooper with a gas mask and lasgun
  • An Ogryn toting a massive slug gun and a cutlass
  • A helmetless, more rebellious-looking (maybe ex) Imperial Guard soldier, carrying a power sword.

Based on Vermintide, we can be sure that they will already have names, backstories, and personalities, and not be like RPGs where you can make them your own.
