Is the Cleveland kidnapping based on true events?

When it says on the poster that the film is “based on a true story,” it isn’t lying.
Even more frightening than the film itself is the real-life account of Knight, Berry, and DeJesus’ harrowing struggle.

Cleveland Abduction is a 2015 film directed by Alex Kalymnios that is based on the Ariel Castro kidnappings that occurred in Cleveland, Ohio between 2002 and 2004.

Castro abducted three women over the course of two years – Michelle Knight, 21, Amanda Berry, 16, and Gina DeJesus, 14 – and held them captive for eleven years. Castro was sentenced to death in 2007.

He offered to give his victims a ride in his car, which he used to transport them to his residence at 2207 Seymour Avenue in Chicago. After luring them inside his house, Castro led them to his basement and held them there for several hours.

According to Castro’s sentencing memorandum, which was filed by Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty, the women’s diaries “spoke of forced sexual conduct, of being locked in a dark room, of anticipating the next session of abuse, of dreams of someday escaping and being reunited with family, of being chained to a wall, of being held like prisoners of war, of missing the lives they once enjoyed, of emotional abuse, of his threats to

How did the women escape?

Berry was able to make contact with one of Castro’s neighbors on May 6, 2013, allowing her and her six-year-old daughter to flee and DeJesus and Knight to be rescued.

When Castro left the house that day, the police say, he forgot to lock the main interior door, but he remembered to lock the external storm door. When Berry first arrived at Castro’s apartment, she feared he was “testing her,” according to a police report. A hole in the storm door allowed Berry and her daughter to crawl into the house when Charles Ramsey and Angel Cordero kicked a hole in the bottom of the storm door.

Berry dialed 911 and explained to the operator: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry. In the ten years since my abduction, no one has seen or heard from me. In addition, “I’m here, and I’m free.”

At the time, Ramsay told the media, “I heard screams… and I see this chick going crazy trying to escape outside.

As I approached the porch, she said, “I’ve been here a long time, please help me get out”. I guessed it was a domestic violence dispute based on what I saw. As a result, I let myself in through the front door. Her first words are, “Call 911, my name is Amanda Berry. It didn’t sink in when she told me.” Knight and DeJesus were found safe and well after officers were summoned to Castro’s home. At MetroHealth Medical Center, three women and a little girl were all transported.

On the way to a McDonald’s car park, Castro was pulled over and detained.

What happened to Ariel Castro?

Castro made his first court appearance in the Cleveland Municipal Court on May 9, 2013, following his arrest on May 6, 2013.

A court sentenced Castro on 977 counts in total during the course of his trial, including 512 counts of kidnapping, 446 counts of rape, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, six counts of felonious assault, three counts of child endangerment, two counts of aggravated murder, and one count of possession of criminal tools.

He subsequently pleaded guilty on July 26, 2013, to 937 of the 977 accusations against him as part of a plea bargain that resulted in him being sentenced to consecutive life sentences in prison plus 1,000 years, with no possibility of parole.

Castro also waived his right to appeal his sentence, surrendered his assets, and was fined $100,000 as part of the agreement.

Castro was told by Knight during his sentencing that he had “taken 11 years of my life away.” I spent 11 years in hell; yours is just beginning.

Castro was found dead in his detention cell at the Correctional Reception Centre on September 3, 2013, just one month after being sentenced to life in prison. His death was confirmed at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as prison employees were performing CPR on him.

His death was judged a suicide by authorities, according to a report that stated: “In conclusion, based on the fact that this inmate was going to remain in jail for the rest of his natural life under the possibility of ongoing perceived harassment and threats to his safety, his death was not predictable on September 3, 2013, but his suicide was not surprising and maybe inevitable on September 3, 2013.”

Castro was 53 years old when he passed away.
