Barry Lane Obituary: How Did the Former Ryder Cup Golfer Die?

Barry Lane, a former Ryder Cup golfer, passed away at the age of 62. The English star had five European Tour victories and eight Legends Tour victories. He played on the DP World Tour 693 times, which puts him fourth on the list of all-time starts. He was also on the 1993 Ryder Cup team that lost to the U.S. at The Belfry. Who is Barry Lane?

Barry Douglas Lane was born in Hayes, Middlesex, but he spent his childhood in Bracknell. Though he didn’t start playing golf until he was 14, by 1976, he was working as an assistant pro at the adjacent Downshire Golf Club. For eight years, he worked as an assistant at Downshire. He was a professional golfer from England. For the European Tour, Lane made 693 starts, putting him at #4 on the all-time list. He has won five times on the DP World Tour.

He competed in the Ryder Cup for Bernard Gallacher’s squad in 1993, when they lost to the United States 15-13 at The Belfry. Lane is honored annually as the Legends Tour’s (formerly European Seniors Tour’s) Rookie of the Year. And in December, he was in Mauritius for the final MCB Tour Championship, when he handed over the newly renamed trophy to Adilson Da Silva of Brazil. A few weeks ago, Lane and his wife Camilla went on an emotional trip to Mauritius for the final event of the Legends Tour, the MCB Tour Championship.

 

What caused His Sudden Death?

As per different sources, Former Ryder Cup player Barry Lane, 62, passed away after a brief illness. More people paid tribute to the Englishman on social media.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Barry Lane,” said European Tour group chief executive Keith Pelley.  “To have seen such a level of success across both the European Tour and the now Legends Tour shows his dedication to the game of golf, and he was a much-loved figure on both tours. “The renaming of the Legends Tour’s Rookie of the Year trophy in his honor is a fitting tribute, and I’m delighted he had the opportunity to present it in December.” Keith Pelley added.
