Another Ryan Murphy Series Overtook “Dahmer” On Netflix As The Number One Show.
On Friday, Oct. 14, Netflix’s most-watched TV series, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, fell to #2 after 21 days at #1. The Watcher took over. Ryan Murphy‘s massive Netflix agreement includes both true-crime limited series.
After Hollywood and Halston’s speedy turnaround early in Murphy’s Netflix arrangement (Ratched and The Politician were pre-existing and not part of that pact), the prolific producer had some time to prepare the second batch of episodes. For more than a year, streamer executives had been promoting Dahmer and The Watcher, which Murphy and Ian Brennan had made together, as good Murphy shows.
Dahmer has been watched over 205.3 million times in its third week and over 700 million hours overall. Netflix’s top 10 TV series are below.
Ryan Murphy, who has a lucrative Netflix deal, co-created Dahmer and directed and wrote The Watcher, Netflix’s #1 show. He co-wrote some Dahmer episodes but is more involved in The Watcher. He co-wrote five episodes and directed two.
In 2018, New York Magazine reported on a couple who received threatening letters to their home, which inspired The Watcher. It has been redone with an all-star cast, like Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts, and more murder and mayhem in the style of Ryan Murphy.
It’s Netflix’s third-most-watched series in its first month, behind Squid Game and Stranger Things.
This current situation, where Ryan Murphy has dethroned his own megahit program with another of his own shows, emphasizes the need for Netflix to have these overall partnerships with mega-producers to pump out hits. In this situation, Murphy’s arrangement looks to have been one of their most lucrative, and I expect it to either continue for a long time or for another streamer to pay him a lot to switch camps.
