The actor has remained largely silent about his health struggles since then, choosing instead to focus on his work as an actor and artist. However, in recent interviews, he has opened up about the difficulties of enduring such a severe illness while maintaining his normal lifestyle. In addition to receiving experimental treatments such as cryotherapy, Kilmer also underwent surgery to remove part of his tongue due to the severity of the cancer’s progression.

Fortunately, Val Kilmer’s condition appears to improve as he continues to progress in his recovery from throat cancer.

Val, a new documentary by Val Kilmer, explores the Batman actor’s life until his filmmaking days (including a backlog of home videos from the last 40 years). It also focuses on the numerous obstacles he has surmounted, such as his struggle with throat cancer.

“Now that it’s more difficult to speak, I want to tell my story more than ever,” he told People after the film’s premiere on Amazon Prime Video. Although it is written in Kilmer’s words, his 26-year-old son, Jack, reads them.

Val Kilmer’s Long  Struggle with Throat Cancer

The tracheostomy left Kilmer with a hole in his throat, which he frequently conceals with a scarf or handkerchief.  “I can’t speak without plugging this hole. You have to choose to breathe or eat,” he told People, adding that he now eats through a feeding tube. “It’s an obstacle that is very present with whoever sees me.”

However, this does not prevent him from working or expressing himself creatively. Last year, he starred in the film Paydirt, and he will soon be seen in the following picture Top Gun: Maverick. He explained, “I sound much worse than I feel.”

Using historical recordings and AI technology, the software startup Sonantic assisted the actor in recreating his voice earlier this year. He introduced the synthesized sound in a one-minute movie, expressing his gratitude.

“After getting treated, my voice as I knew it was taken away from me. People around me struggle to understand when I’m talking,” he stated through the AI voice. “But despite all that, I still feel I’m the same person. Still the same creative soul. A soul that dreams ideas and stories confidently, but now I can express myself again, bring these ideas to you, and show you this part of myself once more. A part that was never truly gone. Just hiding away.”
