Selena Gomez celebrates her birthday today. She’s commemorating her 29th but the star has said some intense, heartfelt things that will startle us and make us very hard to believe that these things were said by a person enjoying her 20s.
“Most of the time, people say negative things for a reaction, and I can’t even bear to give them the satisfaction. So there’s something that I gain from feeling like I’m the bigger person, from walking away from a situation.”
“I think love is blind. You don’t see it; you don’t hear what people are saying or what you’re saying. You don’t see what you’re doing. All you see is the person in front of you. That’s it.”
“I think it’s important for girls to know the strength in everything; their identity and their soul lies within themselves. And too much today, you give that away so easily, from social media to school or relationships. And I think it’s important—I want to remind girls that they’re perfectly strong the way they are.”
“Whenever you have a goal, whether you want to be a doctor or a singer, people will find a way to bring you down… I always tell people that if you have something you‘re really passionate about, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.”
“I realize everybody wants what they don’t have. But at the end of the day, what you have inside is much more beautiful than what’s on the outside!”
“You reflect on the people who used to be in your life, and it’s like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that person was ever really in my life.’ But people are put into your life for seasons, for different reasons, and to teach you lessons.”
“The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve learned that I have to open myself up to all opportunities. Maybe I’ll get burned and not meet the right people, but I won’t know until I do it.”
“I don’t depend on one area of my life to make me happy. It’s really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy. I’ve wanted to be in a strong headspace for years, and I really wasn’t. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I’d feel insecure. You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you if that makes sense.”
“You are not defined by an Instagram photo, by a like, by a comment. That does not define you.”
“Artistically, you want to be able to do a lot of things that can challenge you to not just stay in the same thing.”
