The figure “Peacemaker,” a lower-tier DC Comics character who was arguably best recognized among pop culture aficionados as the principal inspiration for The Comedian in Alan Moore’s transcendent graphic novel Watchmen, was almost unknown two years ago. The HBO Max’s Peacemaker, on the other hand, has become one of the most popular—the best—shows on television, because of some excellent writing from James Gunn and a perfect performance from John Cena.
Following the introduction of Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, in The Suicide Squad, director James Gunn wanted to continue the story of the character. During his quarantine, he began writing the series, picturing, in essence, a whole story arc in eight episodes. As he explained in September 2020, “Normally, I would have been taking more of a vacation in this space, but because it’s COVID, and I’m stuck at home, I decided to write a TV series.”
It’s clear that Gunn is a busy man; the time he spent writing the first season of Peacemaker was between his first job with DC (The Suicide Squad) and perhaps his final job with Marvel (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he has stated will be his final film with this particular group of characters). Do you think he’d have the energy to do another season of Peacemaker? That much is yet to be determined.
The first and most important thing to do is to wait and see how the first batch of Peacemaker episodes turns out. Those of us who have been following Chris/journey Peacemakers have enjoyed it, and the writing and performances are clearly excellent enough to warrant additional seasons. It will be interesting to watch what happens with a star and a creator who are both in high demand. And perhaps rewatch the opening dance scene for a hundred or so more times as well.
Peacemaker Season 2 Release Date
We haven’t figured it out yet. Gunn has previously stated that he has ideas for a potential Season 2 (“I’m saving someone for season two,” he said in a tweet last year when asked if there were any characters he had to reluctantly cut from his Peacemaker story), but he later clarified that this did not necessarily imply that it would happen or that anyone would be signed on to do so.
In his letter, he stated that “just because I have characters in mind for Season 2 does not indicate that either HBOMax or John and I have committed to it yet.”

He did, however, appear to imply that Season 2 of Peacemaker is becoming more and more feasible as the show’s popularity grows. “There’s a very good likelihood of that happening. Right now, we’re the most popular show on the planet “He said while speaking with Collider. We’re excited because the show is doing exceptionally well, and we all enjoy doing it. We just need to cross some Ts and cross some Is, which is essentially what I’m doing right now.”
If Peacemaker doesn’t get a Season 2, there’s already speculation that Gunn’s world, which was introduced in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, will be continued in some form. “Right now, we’re working on something else, another television show that’s tied to that universe,” said the team. Gunn expressed himself. “I’m at a loss for what to say. Despite the fact that it is tied to this universe, I don’t believe it will be in the same genre as Peacemaker. Not as much of a comedy as Peacemaker, but still entertaining.”
There are also suggestions that Holland’s Emilia Harcourt would appear with The Rock in Black Adam, which is set to be released later in 2022—so it appears that this collection of characters is growing in scope.

Peacemaker Season 2 Plot
That is yet to be determined, although it seems likely that Season 2 will be a completely different plot from the first. According to what we’ve heard so far, Gunn approached the writing of Peacemaker as if it were a big film that was divided into eight chapters. Consequently, it would be unusual if any of our ongoing storylines were left blatantly unfinished. In spite of this fact, the man has already been in a total of eight films based on superhero comic books (in both Marvel and DC universes), and anyone who has ever read a superhero comic story knows that there is nothing they enjoy more than a hint at what’s to come in the next installment.
Peacemaker Season 2 Cast
It goes without saying that there is no Peacemaker without John Cena in the role of Christopher Smith/Peacemaker. Adrian Chase/Vigilante has also proven to be a (hilarious!) fan-favorite revelation, and Danielle Brooks, Steve Agee, and Holland have all shown to have excellent chemistry with Cena and with one another; all of these individuals appear to be essential to the success of Peacemaker in its current format. However, there is always the possibility that Season 2 just relocates our main hero to a very different setting with a completely different cast of characters surrounding him. Stranger things have happened in the past!
Team commander Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Auggie Smith/White Dragon are two characters who we may definitely say farewell to for good: Murn and Auggie Smith/White Dragon (Robert Patrick). Both characters were killed off in the seventh episode of the series, and it’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which they would reappear.
Several more characters will very certainly perish in the final act. But for the time being, this is all we have.
