John Michael Osbourne entered this world on December 3, 1948, in Birmingham, England. There are three older sisters and two younger brothers in his family. The name “Ozzy” has been attached to him since he was a young child. He decided to become a musician after hearing the Beatles’ “She Loves You” (1963). He dropped out of school when he was 15 and has since held a number of jobs, including those of construction site laborer, trainee plumber, apprentice toolmaker, and automobile factory horn-tuner.

Osbourne married his first wife, Thelma Riley, in 1971 after meeting her at a Birmingham nightclub. They had two children together, and Osbourne adopted Thelma’s son from a prior relationship; nevertheless, they later split up. In late 1967, Geezer Butler persuaded Osbourne to join Rare Breed as the band’s vocalist. When Rare Breed disbanded after only two performances, Osbourne and Butler got back together to form the bank Polka Tulk Blues with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward.
In August of 1969, the band decided to change their name to Black Sabbath after seeing the movie of the same name. They transitioned into playing a more intense blues sound, along with gloomier and darker lyrics. Black Sabbath’s first single, “Evil Woman,” was released on Philips Records in January 1970, and their debut album, also titled Black Sabbath, was released in February 1970.
