EARLIER, on June 13: Lady Gaga, who won an Oscar and was last seen in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, is in early talks to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Warner Bros.’ Joker: Folie à Deux, Deadline can confirm. Even though Phoenix hasn’t signed a contract for the new Joker movie yet, we’ve heard that talks are going well.
We don’t know much about the plot of the Joker sequel yet, but we do know that Todd Phillips will be back to direct it. Like the first movie, he and Scott Silver wrote the script together. We’ve heard that Gaga will play Harley Quinn, the therapist at Arkham Asylum who falls in love with her patient Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker. Her version of the character will be set in a different DC universe than Margot Robbie’s in the Suicide Squad movies.
Phillips’ Joker, which will be shown for the first time in 2019, watched as Fleck, a stand-up comedian with mental problems, went on a downward spiral that led to the creation of an iconic villain. The movie made more than $1 billion all over the world, and it won Phoenix his first Oscar. Hildur Gunadóttir also won an Oscar for Best Original Score.
Gaga’s big break came with the Warner Bros. musical drama A Star Is Born, which was directed by Bradley Cooper and also produced by Phillips. The actress and pop star most recently played Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, which was released by MGM and United Artists Releasing. She also contributed the song “Hold My Hand” to Top Gun: Maverick, which has made more than $750 million at the worldwide box office so far.
