Houston Astros’ Pitcher Justin Verlander On Injured List With Calf Injury

Astros star pitcherJustin Verlanderwas relieved to be placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a right calf issue, which general manager James Click said would require a “very short term” recuperation. After all, the news might have been much worse.

The team made the decision public on Tuesday and said that an MRI on the calf taken on Monday showed fascial disturbance but no disruption of muscle fibres.

After having an MRI on Monday, Verlander, who is widely regarded as the favourite to win the AL Cy Young Award, discovered fascial disruption but not muscle fibre damage. Verlander was somewhat relieved by this finding and encouraged that he won’t be out for much longer than what the IL stint required.

Verlander said he doesn’t have a firm comeback date but doesn’t anticipate being sidelined for an extended period of time.

Verlander stated, “I didn’t understand how dangerous even a very slight muscle calf injury can be. “If that happened, our dialogue would be very different. Fascia, however, seems to recover considerably more quickly. In terms of the range of calf injuries, I believe this was the best news I could have received.

“I only became aware of how close it came to potentially terminating the season when I was talking to the physicians about it after the diagnosis was made. I believe we would be days away from not even picking up a ball if the muscle fibres had been affected.

Verlander remarked, “I feel like I really sort of escaped a bullet here where the muscle isn’t actually engaged.” “It’s the fascia, which I consider to be a blessing because I had no idea the severity of even a very little muscle calf damage. We’d be talking about something entirely different if that happened.

The injury list placement for Verlander began on Monday. In the third inning of his start against the Orioles on Sunday, he was hurt while attempting to cover first base during a rundown.

In the upcoming days, they should know more about how long he will be away, according to general manager James Click.

After the body has had time to recuperate for the first 48 to 72 hours, Click predicted that they will know a lot more about the return schedule. But we anticipate and hope that this will only be a temporary situation.

Verlander, who has made 24 starts this season and has a 16-3 record with an MLB-best 1.84 ERA, acknowledged that his calf still hurts occasionally. He continued, “Each day when I wake up and get out of bed, it’s like, ‘OK, I feel like I can walk a little more normal today without any discomfort.’ There is no schedule for when he will play baseball again. And it’s occurring so fast.

Verlander claimed he felt a pop as he took out to run on the play and was pleased to find it wasn’t a serious injury. However, he is already feeling better after two days.

It became quite painful, he remarked. “It still hurts. I’m taking a few days off from it. According to what every doctor has mentioned, fascia heals rather quickly. So before I push it, I’m simply trying to allow it time to recover.

Prior to leaving the game on Sunday, the right-hander reduced his major league-best ERA to 1.84 after pitching three scoreless innings.

Verlander, 39, made a comeback this season after missing nearly two seasons due to Tommy John surgery. He has a record of 8-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his previous 10 outings going into Sunday’s game against the Orioles.

With 16 victories, Verlander is tied for the most in the majors with Atlanta’s Kyle Wright and right-hander Tony Gonsolin of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
