Happy Valley made a big splash when it first came out in 2014. Sarah Lancashire’s role as the haunted Northern police sergeant Catherine Cawood brought tears, thrills, and laughs.

Two years later, the sequel surprised many people by being just as good as the first one, and some would even say it was better. That happened six years ago, though.

At least we finally know that there will be a third season.

So, what will happen next in that troubled town? When can we expect to see Happy Valley again?

Happy Valley series 3 Release Date

The BBC has said that season three of Happy Valley is a go.

But you should all make the most of it because this is also the last season of the beloved show.

“I’m happy to be back in Catherine Cawood’s world with her family and coworkers for the last book in the Happy Valley trilogy,” said the book’s creator and author, Sally Wainwright. “It’s great to see how this series has changed people all over the world for the better.”

The best-case scenario for when the next season will come out is at the end of 2022, but it’s more likely to be in the first half of 2023.

You can look forward to six brand-new episodes.

Happy Valley season 3 cast:

Sarah Lancashire will be back as Cawood, and James Norton will be back as the crazy Tommy Lee Royce. Catherine’s sister Claire, played by Siobhan Finneran, will also be in the new episodes.

James said, “To play Tommy one last time is a great and scary honor, and I’ve been looking forward to it since the last series ended six years ago.”

“It’s time to let the dog see the rabbit,” Sarah teased.

Siobhan is just as excited, and she said, “I’m so happy to be going back to Happy Valley as Clare, and I’m thrilled to be able to answer the question, “Please tell me there’s going to be another Happy Valley?” with a resounding, “Yes, there is.”

Amit Shah (Doctor Who), Mark Stanley (The Bay), and Mollie Winnard will also be joining the team as new members (Four Lives). All three will have important parts in the play.

Neil Ackroyd, Clare’s recovering-alcoholic boyfriend, is played by Con O’Neill. Nevison Gallagher is played by George Costigan, and Ann, his daughter, is played by Irish actress Charlie Murphy.

Derek Riddell, who plays Richard Cawood, Karl Davies, who plays Daniel Cawood, Susan Lynch, who plays Alison Garrs, Rick Warden, who plays Mike Taylor, Vincent Franklin, who plays Andy Shepherd, and Rhys Connah, who plays Ryan Cawood, are also all coming back.

Happy Valley season 3 plot

The official synopsis says, “When Catherine finds the body of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, it sets off a chain of events that leads her right back to Tommy Lee Royce.”

“Her grandson Ryan is now 16 and still lives with Catherine, but he has his own ideas about how he wants to relate to the man Catherine refuses to call Ryan’s father.

“Catherine is almost ready to retire, but she is still fighting against the problem of drugs in the valley and the people who sell them.

So, will Ryan finally find out more about Tommy and, more importantly, what he can do? After all, he slept with Ryan’s mother, who is Catherine’s daughter, and made her pregnant. In the end, she killed herself because of it.

With retirement coming up, you have to wonder if she will even make it out of the police force alive. If movies have taught us anything, it’s that the most dangerous case for a police officer is the “one last job” they have to do before they retire.

The show’s first episode was shot in January 2022, and Sarah was back in her police uniform. So let’s hope that’s a good sign that the show is going well.
