In the latest issue of People magazine, Matthew Perry spoke about his battle with opioids. The Friends actor recalled surviving a life-threatening drug overdose incident at age 49. He recounted how he spent two months in a coma after a ruptured colon and spent five months in the hospital recovering.
Doctors then told him that his chances of survival were 2%. The 53-year-old actor is best known for playing the role of Chandler Bing in the 1994 sitcom Friends. His upcoming memoir, in which he discusses his battle with addiction, is entitled Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

Perry told the magazine that doctors told his family he had a “2 percent chance of survival.” He was connected to an “Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO)” that does “all breathing” of the lungs and heart. His alcoholism began in the 90s while filming Friends.
He said he was able to “cope” at the time, aged 24. But by the age of 34, he was “rooted in a lot of problems,” he added. He also said he was completely sober around 2002, when filming for the last two seasons was underway.
In the same year, he was nominated for the Best Actor Award. He used to take 55 of his Vicodin a day, Perry said, reminiscing about his lowest moment.
