A report from the Wall Street Journal says that Elon Musk’s affair with Sergey Brin’s wife, Nicole Shanahan, broke up an old friendship between the two men. Sources close to the situation told the WSJ that the couple filed for divorce earlier this year, citing “irreconcilable differences.” However, Musk has now denied both the alleged affair and the fact that he is still friends with Brin, saying that the report is based on “third-party random hearsay.”
Musk and Shanahan’s affair is said to have happened at the popular Art Basel event in Miami after Musk broke up with his girlfriend at the time, Claire Boucher, also known as Grimes. The WSJ heard from sources that Brin and Shanahan were living apart but still together at the time. People say that the couple’s relationship was tense because of problems with the COVID-19 lockdowns and their 3-year-old daughter.
After the report came out, Musk took to Twitter to say that the story was “total bs.” Musk said, “Sergey and I are friends, and we were at the same party last night! In three years, I’ve only seen Nicole twice, and both times there were a lot of other people around. There’s no romance.” The billionaire executive also said, “Haven’t even had sex in ages (sigh)”

Musk’s personal life is always connected to his business, and that hasn’t changed even as the world’s richest man tries to get out of a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter. A report from Insider earlier this month said that Musk had twins with Shivon Zilli’s, who is a top executive at Musk’s company Neuralink and used to work for Tesla. The twins were born just a few weeks before Musk and Boucher’s second child was born through a surrogate. This makes Musk’s known number of children nine.
In May, a former flight attendant for SpaceX said that the company paid her $250,000 to keep quiet about something that happened with Musk. The woman says that Musk asked her for a massage, stripped down in front of her, and asked her out for s*x.
Brin, on the other hand, was once called “the Google playboy” because of his sexual relationships with Google employees. Human resources manager Heather Cairns said that Brin’s actions were “a sexual harassment claim waiting to happen.” In 2014, Vanity Fair wrote about Brin’s relationship with Google Glass marketing manager Amanda Rosenberg. At the time, he was still married to 23andMe co-creator Anne Wojcicki, and she was dating another Google executive. After Brin and Wojcicki split up in 2015, he married Shanahan in secret in 2018. The WSJ says that as part of the divorce process, Shanahan wants more than $1 billion of Brin’s nearly $100 billion fortune.
The report says that Brin and Musk were close friends. During the recession of 2008, Brin gave Musk’s company Tesla $500,000 in funding. In 2015, Musk paid Brin back by making him one of the first people to buy a Model X. Sources told the WSJ that Musk got down on one knee at a party earlier this year and begged Brin to forgive him. The report says that the two still don’t talk much and that Brin has told his advisors to sell his personal investments in Musk’s businesses.
