The second season of Bodyguard is coming, at last!
BBC1 bosses have confirmed that Jed Mercurio’s political conspiracy thriller will be back on our screens, with Richard Madden set to play Police Sergeant David Budd once again.
The first series was a big hit with viewers in 2018. It was one of the most popular dramas of the decade, with 11 million people watching the finale and millions more watching on iPlayer. So, it’s been four years since the first series, which was very exciting, so it’s safe to say that fans want more.
Since Richard Madden’s performance, people have talked about him being the next James Bond.
We’ve been looking for kompromat about Bodyguard, and here’s everything we know about the second, much-anticipated season…
Bodyguard season 2 Release Date:
It’s very hard to answer this question. The first season of “Bodyguard” came out in August and September of 2018. British shows are known for taking a long time to make new seasons, so fans knew it would be a while before new episodes came out. As of now, the show hasn’t been officially renewed or canceled, but that doesn’t mean much since Madden, Mercurio, and others involved with “Bodyguard” have been talking about a second season ever since the first one ended, and it seems almost certain to happen. When is the question?
In a 2018 interview with Deadline, Madden seemed sure that Season 2 would happen. He said, “I’m going to meet Jed in a couple of weeks to talk and see what’s in his brilliant mind.” Mercurio said at the Banff World Music Festival in the middle of 2019 that he was in talks with BBC, but that Season 2 had not yet been given the go-ahead (via The Hollywood Reporter). In late 2019, Nicholas Gleaves, who played Roger Penhaligon in the first season of “Bodyguard,” told RadioTimes that he talked to a producer who “absolutely guaranteed” a second season, but until it’s official, it’s still up in the air.
Now that it’s 2021, Madden’s roles in “From Now” and “Eternals” are over, so he has time to go back to “Bodyguard.” Taking a look at the timeline, the earliest new episodes could come out is probably late next year or early in 2023, unless BBC starts making them right away.
Bodyguard season 2 plot
In the first season, Police Sergeant David Budd was given the job of being Home Secretary Julia Montague’s principal protection officer (PPO) (played by Keeley Hawes). Budd didn’t agree with Montague’s political views, but the two of them worked closely together and later had an affair…
Jed Mercurio is known for keeping his shows’ plots a secret, and it looks like the new season of Bodyguard will be no different. However, David Budd could be working as a security expert for a member of the Royal Family or a foreign dignitary.
“I learned a lot from the success of Bodyguard. It was heartening to see how an audience would come to something that is fresh and original,” says Mercurio.
“Bodyguard was just an original concept and people hit the ground running with it. I would love to do something in the next couple of years.”
Additionally, it appears like the second season will begin a new narrative rather than continue the one that we loved so much in season one.
“There are things in place in series one that we can exploit dramatically further down the line,” explains Jed. “But I haven’t done a lot of forward planning because it can be too disheartening if the series isn’t recommissioned.”
“You just don’t know, so it’s something that I think is best done after the fact. If you’re lucky enough to have a second or third series, or whatever it is, and there are things from the past that can be useful, I think that’s the best way to do it.
“I think the problem with putting things in the first season that has no relevance to the first season is that you can end up making something quite difficult to follow. It feels like things don’t quite knit together and so you lose the pace and the narrative drive that you should be trying to go for with a thriller series.”
Bodyguard season 2 Cast
The first thing to note is that “Bodyguard” wouldn’t be the same without PS Budd, so it’s reasonable to assume that Madden will reprise his role as the film’s eponymous character. Gina McKee, who plays Commander Anne Sampson, the head of the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command, Sophie Rundle, who plays PS Budd’s estranged wife and the mother of their two children, Nina Toussaint-White, who plays DS Louise Rayburn, an investigator who appears to trust PS Budd despite the investigation against him, and Ash Tandon, who plays DCI Deepak Sharma, are other members of the supporting cast who are likely to return.
Although it is safe to assume that Hawes won’t reprise his role as Montague, other members of the supporting cast, such as Vincent Franklin as Minister of State Mike Travis, Stuart Bowman as Director-General of MI-5 Stephen Hunter-Dunn, Pippa Haywood as corrupt CSI Lorraine Craddock, or Michael Schaeffer as the enigmatic “Richard Longcross,” could make an appearance in upcoming storylines. Be ready to witness some new faces in Budd’s life because the next episodes could also involve a time-hop.
Where can I watch Bodyguard season 1?
Bodyguard season one’s whole first six episodes are now accessible on Netflix.
What will be the main focus of Bodyguard Season 2?
At the conclusion of Season 1 of “Bodyguard,” Budd successfully identifies the perpetrators of Montague’s murder as well as a few government officials who are gaming the system to conceal illegal activity. Budd chooses to get treatment for his PTSD in order to mend his ties with Vicky and his children after receiving a formal exoneration from all charges relating to Montague’s death. Given the state of their relationship at the end of the season, it appears like Budd and Vicky will not reconcile; instead, each has plans to find other people and go on, although they will continue to co-parent.
After all is revealed, Hunter-Dunn, the head of MI-5, and the British Prime Minister are both forced to quit. Longcross escapes from jail, giving the program more opportunity to delve into his identity and motivations. Even though their confrontations are brief in “Bodyguard” Season 1, they are tight and compelling. It would be amazing to see their rivalry deepen in the next seasons. The plotline of “Bodyguard” Season 2 is yet undetermined, although it’s likely that the show may pick up a few years later, introducing fans to a significantly altered Budd.
