NHL’s Blue Jackets goalie Matiss Kivlenieks passes away at 24, in a tragic fireworks malfunction

Matiss Kivlenieks who was a goaltender for Columbus Blue Jacket passes away at 24 on an incident that took place on 4th July. The cause was a head injury due to a firework-related incident. The sports community is still shock and mourning the loss of their star player.

He had been a goalie for Columbus Blue Jacket since 2017. Novi, Michigan police officer Jason Meier reported to the Associated Press that, this incident was caused when a mortar-style firework tilted and started firing at people, he was in a hot tub at that time. When he fled from the hot tub, Matiss Kivlenieks slipped and hit his head on the concrete. The emergency team arrived quickly and took him to the hospital where he was reported dead. “At the moment, we’re pretty certain this was a tragic accident,” Meier reported.

The team’s official Twitter account tweeted that, “It’s with a very heavy heart that we share the news that goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks passed away last night at the age of 24,” they added “We are heartbroken. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in peace, Kivi.”

This rising star was determined for his sport and joined as a free agent with Columbus Blue Jacket in 2017. He made his NHL debut at Madison Square Garden in January 2020.
Right after the news surfaced many teams from all NHL offered their thoughts and prayers to the team members and family members of Matiss Kivlenieks.
