Toronto International Film Festival 2021: Here’s a list of all the films to be screened, as well as special presentations

It was recently announced that Dear Evan Hansen,The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Clifford the Big Red Dog will be added to the offical line up for this year Toronto International Film Festival.

The festivals orgaizers also revealed that Dear Evan Hansen will open the festival. Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director and Co-Head, TIFF stated the reason for the opening act that “There was no question that Dear Evan Hansen was the ideal film to launch the Festival this year, This film is ultimately about healing, forgiveness, and reaffirms how connected and essential we all are to one another. We couldn’t think of a more important idea to celebrate this year as we come together once again to share the power and joy of cinema in theaters together.”

The closing act of the festival was relces to be Zhang Yimou’s One Second as the movie by many is describeded as  “a love letter to movies and a reminder of how they can unite people, regardless of our differences.”

It was also announced that Canada will begin allowing vaccinated Americans to cross the border starting on August 9. Visitors from the rest of the world will be eligible to enter Canada starting September 7.

The 46th Toronto International Film Festival is schedued to take place from September 9 to 18, 2021.

GALA PRESENTATION are as follows:

1. Belfast –  Writer and Directer: Kenneth Branagh

Country: United Kingdom [World Premiere]  

Belfast is an upcoming British-Irish drama film written and directed by Kenneth Branagh. It stars Judi DenchCaitriona BalfeJamie DornanCiarán Hinds and Jude Hill.

2. Clifford the Big Red Dog –        Director: Walt Becker
Country: USA/United Kingdom/Canada [World Premiere]

This is an upcoming American live-action/CGI family adventure comedy film directed by Walt Becker. It is based on the children’s book series of the same name by Norman Bridwell. The film stars Jack Whitehall, Darby Camp, Tony Hale, Sienna Guillory and more,as the voice of the title character.

3. Dear Evan Hansen-  Director: Stephen Chbosky
Country: USA
World Premiere  [Opening Night Film]

This is an upcoming American musical teen drama film directed by Stephen Chbosky, and adapted for the screen by Steven Levenson.

4. The Electrical Life of Louis Wain- Director: Will Sharpe
Country: United Kingdom
Canadian Premiere

This is an upcoming biographical film directed by Will Sharpe and written by Sharpe and Simon Stephenson. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Claire Foy, Andrea Riseborough, and Toby Jones.

5. The Eyes of Tammy Faye- Director: Michael Showalter
Country: USA
World Premiere

This is an upcoming American period drama film based on the documentary of the same name by Fenton Bailey. The film was directed by Michael Showalter. Jessica Chastain, who also produces the film, stars in the title role. Andrew Garfield, Cherry Jones and Vincent D’Onofrio also star.

6. Jagged- Director: Alison Klayman

World Premiere

Alanis Morissette reflects on her 1990s rise to rock stardom, in this new documentary from Alison Klayman

7. Last Night in Soho- Director: Edgar Wright
Country: United Kingdom
North American Premiere

This is an upcoming British psychological horror film directed by Edgar Wright, with a screenplay by Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, from a story by Wright.

8. The Mad Women’s Ball (Le Bal des folles)- Director: Mélanie Laurent
Country: France, World Premiere

It is based upon the novel Le bal des folles by Victoria Mas. It stars Laurent, Lou de Laâge, Emmanuelle Bercot, Benjamin Voisin, Cédric Khan and Grégoire Bonnet.

9. Night Raiders-  Director: Danis Goulet 
Countries: Canada/New Zealand
North American Premiere

This Canadian-New Zealand science fiction apocalyptic film is written and directed by Danis Goulet.

10. One Second- Director: Zhang Yimou
Country: China
North American Premiere [Closing Night Film]

This is a 2020 Chinese drama film directed by Zhang Yimou, about a man who escapes from a farm-prison during the Cultural Revolution for just a glance of his daughter.

11. The Survivor –  Director: Barry Levinson

World Premiere

This is an upcoming American biographical drama film, directed by Barry Levinson, from a screenplay by Justine Juel Gillmer. It stars Ben Foster, Billy Magnussen, Danny DeVito and more.

Ali and Ava is a 2021 British drama film, written and directed by Clio Barnard. It stars Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook.

2. All My Puny Sorrows- Director:  Michael McGowan
Country: Canada, World Premiere

The film, which was written, produced, and directed by Michael McGowan, stars Alison Pill, Sarah Gadon, Marin Almasi, and Aly Mawji.

3. Benediction- Director: Terence Davies

Country: United Kingdom, World Premiere

Benediction is an upcoming biographical drama film written and directed by Terence Davies. It stars Jack Lowden and Peter Capaldi.

4. Bergman Island- Director: Mia Hansen-Løve

Country: France, International Premiere

Bergman Island is a 2021 internationally co-produced drama film, written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. It stars Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie.

5. Charlotte-  Director: Eric Warin, Tahir Rana

The remarkable true story of Charlotte Salomon, a German Jewish artist defying incredible odds to create a masterpiece during World War II.

6. Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over-  Director: Dave Wooley, David Heilbroner

Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over is an upcoming American documentary film directed by Dave Wooley and David Heilbroner. It follows the life and career of Dionne Warwick.

7. Drive My Car- Director: Ryusuke Hamaguchi
Country: Japan, North American Premiere

This based on the short story of the same name by Haruki Murakami from his 2014 short story collection Men Without Women.

8. Encounter- Director: Michael Pearce
Country: United Kingdom/USA, International Premiere

Encounter is an upcoming British sci-fi  film, directed by Michael Pearce from a screenplay by Pearce and Joe Barton. It stars Riz Ahmed, Octavia Spencer, and Lucian-River Chauhan.

9. The Guilty- Director: Antoine Fuqua
Country: USA, World Premiere

The film is a remake of the 2018 Danish film of the same name and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ethan Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard, Riley Keough, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Paul Dano, and Bill Burr.

10. I’m Your Man- Director: Maria Schrader

This is a German drama film written and directed by Maria Schrader. The film stars Maren Eggert.

11. Inexorable- Director: Fabrice du Welz

The film from Fabrice du Welz (Alleluia) follows a bestselling novelist who moves into an eerie old mansion in search of inspiration.

12. Lakewood- Director: Phillip Noyce
Country: Canada, World Premiere

A nerve-rattling thriller about a mother struggling to rescue her son from a school shooter.

13. The Middle Man- Director: Bent Hamer
Country: Norway/Canada/Germany/Denmark, 
World Premiere

An oddball comedy by Bent Hamer.

14. Official Competition (Competencia Oficial)- Director: Mariano Cohn, Gastón Duprat
Country: Spain/Argentina, North American Premiere

A screenplay by Duprat, Cohn, and Andrés Duprat. It stars Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz and Oscar Martínez.

15. Paris, 13th District (Les Olympiades)- Director: Jacques Audiard
Country:  France, North American Premiere

It is based on the short comic stories Amber SweetHawaiian Getaway and Killing and Dying from the book of the latter’s name by American cartoonist Adrian Tomine.

16. Petite Maman- Director: Céline Sciamma
Country: France, Canadian Premiere

It stars Joséphine Sanz, Gabrielle Sanz, Stéphane Varupenne, Nina Meurisse and Margo Abascal.

17. The Starling- Director: Theodore Melfi
Country: USA, World Premiere

It stars Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd, Kevin Kline, and Loretta Devine.

18. The Story of My Wife- Director: Ildikó Enyedi
Country: Hungary/Germany/Italy/France, North American Premiere

It is a 2021 internationally co-produced romantic drama film written and directed by Ildikó Enyedi, based on the 1942 novel of the same name by Milán Füst.

19. Three Floors (Tre Piani)     Director: Nanni Moretti    Country: Italy/France

It is based on the 2017 novel Shalosh Qomot by Israeli writer Eshkol Nevo, moving the setting from Tel Aviv to Rome, and also marking Moretti’s first adaptation of the work of another artist.

20. Violet-  Director: Justine Bateman
Contry: USA, International Premiere

It stars Olivia Munn, Luke Bracey and Justin Theroux.

21. The Worst Person In The World (Verdens Verste Menneske)- Director: Joachim Trier
Country: Norway/France/Sweden/Denmark, 
North American Premiere

It is the third film, after Reprise and Oslo, August 31st, in the director’s “Oslo Trilogy.
