Early Life and Comedy Career

Broderick Stephen Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia on January 17, 1957. His family eventually relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended Glenville High School and graduated in 1974.

He attended Kent University before transferring to West Virginia University. He has worked as a boxer, autoworker, and insurance salesman, as well as a carpet cleaner and mailman, and had his comedic debut on October 8, 1985, at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland, Ohio. Harvey is no stranger to adversity; during his early career, he was homeless for three years in the late 1980s, sleeping in his 1976 Ford when the concerts he performed at did not provide a motel.

Harvey secured a slot as the host of the TV show “It’s Showtime at the Apollo” after being a finalist in the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search in 1990. Harvey has three wives and seven kids (four biological and three stepchildren). His first wife Marcia Harvey gave him two girls (Brandi and Karli) and a son (Broderick Harvey Jr.). Harvey’s second wife, Mary Shackelford, had a son called Wynton. They split in November 2005. In 2011, 199th District Court Judge Robert Dry of Collin County, Texas, expressed worry that Mary Harvey was distributing misleading information regarding the divorce, claiming she was not economically poor.

Harvey married Marjorie Bridges in June 2007, claiming she changed his life and made him a better guy. Steve Harvey adopted Marjorie Harvey’s three children (Morgan, Jason, and Lori).
