Michael J. Fox, whose father was a Canadian military officer, made his first appearance on TV in Vancouver when he was 15 years old.Three years later, he moved to the United States and lived in poor conditions until he could get his green card.
Fox’s big break came in 1980 when he made his debut on American TV and in a movie simultaneously. He got a regular role on the weekly series Palmerstown, U.S.A. and a small part in the movie Midnight Madness.
The Screen Actors Guild made the actor change his name from Michael Fox to Michael J. Fox so that he would not be confused with an older character actor with the same name.

Michael J. Fox Early Years
Michael Andrew Fox was born on June 9, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta. His stage name, Michael J. Fox, is what most people know him by.
His mother, Phyllis (née Piper), was an actress and payroll clerk, and his father, William Fox, was a police officer and member of the Canadian Forces. He is part English and part Scottish.

Because of his father’s job, the family moved around a lot. When his father retired in 1971, they finally settled in Burnaby, which is near Vancouver. Fox went to school at Burnaby Central Secondary.

When he was 15, he got his first job in the entertainment business. He was the main character in “Leo and Me“, a Canadian TV show made by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
The show was made and filmed for the first time in 1976, but it did not start airing until 1981. There were 12 episodes in all.
“Letters from Frank“, a TV movie, was his first show on American TV (1979). When he tried to sign up with the Screen Actors Guild at this time, he found that someone else had already done so under the name Michael Fox.

He did not like how “Michael A. Fox” sounded, and he also did not like the names “Andrew” or “Andy”, so he decided to give himself a new middle initial. As a tribute to the actor Michael J. Pollard, he chose “J.” as his last name.
‘Family Ties’ Show: Fox’s first role in a full-length movie was in 1980’s “Midnight Madness” Next came “Class of 1984” in 1982. Then, in 1982, he was chosen to play Alex P. Keaton, a “Young Republican” on the NBC show “Family Ties.”
From 1982 to 1989, there were seven seasons of the show. The show was supposed to be about the parents of the family at first, but Fox’s character was so popular that after the fourth episode, NBC made him the main character. The show did incredibly well.
At the height of its popularity, it was watched weekly by one-third of all American homes. Fox won three Emmy Awards (1986, 1987, and 1988) and a Golden Globe Award (1988) for his role on “Family Ties” (in 1989).
‘Back to the Future’: In January 1985, Fox was chosen to play Marty McFly in “Back to the Future“, a movie about going back in time. Robert Zemeckis wanted to cast Michael J. Fox as Marty from the start, but “Family Ties” creator Gary David Goldberg would not let Zemeckis talk to Fox because he needed Fox to carry the show while Meredith Baxter was on maternity leave.
Zemeckis instead chose Eric Stoltz to play Marty and started making “Back to the Future” He later replaced Stoltz with Fox when Baxter went back to “Family Ties”, which opened up some time on Fox’s schedule. Fox had to put up with a demanding schedule so they could work on the movie and the TV show simultaneously.

He would practise for “Family Ties” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and then he would go to the set of “Back to the Future” to rehearse and film until 2:30 a.m. This plan was in effect for two months!
However, his hard work paid off because “Back to the Future” was a massive hit with audiences and critics alike. It made $381.11 million worldwide, and for eight straight weekends in 1985, it was the top movie in the US. In October 2017, they sold it for $3.9 million.
