LeVar Burton discloses how he finally got the chance to host “Jeopardy”

The actor LeVar Burton first expressed his desire to host the quiz show in a tweet in September, when a user suggested him for the role and wrote: “Not gonna lie, I feel like I’ve been preparing my whole life to occupy the @Jeopardy host podium when Alex retires.”

Burton then contacted the show’s executive producer, Mike Richards, to lobby for a guest-hosting spot and tweeted his appreciation for an online petition to make him the show’s permanent host that has garnered more than 250,000 signatures from his fans since November.

Burton’s officalial stated to host on Monday and said that there are two more hosts to come before the season finale on Aug. 13. The actor who is a longtime viewer said that he’s very he’s invested in how the quiz show evolves after Alex Trebek’s death in November.

Burton sees “Jeopardy!” as “a natural, logical extension of what I’ve been doing for 45 years,” combining entertainment and education, as per USA Today.

LeVar also shared that he didn’t want to have any regrets and chose “lobby to ward off any remorse about a missed opportunity.”

“I don’t want to look back on my life and tick off all of the things that I wish I had said or done,” he says. “I just knew that if I let the opportunity pass without speaking my mind and my heart and going after what I’ve wanted, that I would be filled with regret, and I don’t want that for myself,” said the Star Trek actor.

When Burton was asked, “What was that moment like when you learned that you were going to finally get your chance to guest host?” LeVar Burton answered that he was “ecstatic”

“Yes! Yes! Yes! I’m going to get the opportunity. I’m going to get in the room. I have an opportunity now to compete for what I want.” That’s the best feeling imaginable. And then the reality set in: “Oh my God. Now I have to deliver.” stated Burton.
