It is the first season of “Invasion,” a massive sci-fi show on Apple TV+ that weaves together the classic story of a large-scale alien invasion with painfully personal, human perspectives. The drama and action spread throughout the world as the events unfold in front of a cast of characters that range from a Long Island-based immigrant family to the Japanese space program, among others. While everyone is doing everything they can to make sense of the situation and survive in the face of an incomprehensible global threat, the viewers are firmly perched on the edge of their seats throughout the episode.
Invasion’s first season focuses on the very beginning of what appears to be a violent, planetary-scale conflict against the mysterious invaders, making it only natural that fans of the show are interested in seeing how the situation will develop. Fortunately, “Invasion” has been officially renewed for a second season on Apple TV+ (via Deadline). Check out what we know so far about the release date, cast, and plot of “Invasion” Season 2 in the video below.
Invasion Season 2 Confirmed Release Date
It’s a little surprising that “Invasion” has been renewed for a second season, given that the show’s critical reception has been, to put it mildly, mixed. Its Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating, as well as its audience score, are both significantly below average. There’s also the not-insignificant matter of the fact that the show is extremely expensive to produce. According to star Shamier Anderson (who portrays military man Trevante Ward), the first season of “Invasion” had a $200 million budget, according to Anderson (per The Hollywood Reporter).
Apple TV+, on the other hand, continues to have faith in the show. Deadline reports that the streaming service will renew the show for a second season on December 8, 2021, putting an end to speculation about whether the story will be continued or not. While the exact date of Season 2’s release is still up in the air, the fact that Season 1 was announced in January 2019 (via Apple Insider) and premiered on October 22, 2022, suggests that it will most likely air in the autumn of 2022. (taking the pandemic into account for why there was an extra-long wait for the release for Season 1).

Invasion Season 2 cast
A cast listing for Season 1 of The Walking Dead was included in the announcement of the renewal, which included almost every major character from the show’s first season (per Variety). While it’s unclear whether or not all of these actors will return for the show’s second season, it’s probably safe to proceed under the assumption that they will… at least for the foreseeable future.
Sam Neill hasn’t said anything about a possible return to his role as Oklahoman Sheriff John Bell Tyson on his delightful, wine and farm animal-themed official Twitter account, but as his involvement in the upcoming “Jurassic World: Dominion” shows, the legendary actor isn’t exactly opposed to revisiting a juicy role in the future. Shamier Anderson (who plays Trevante Ward, the viewpoint character in the Afghanistan portion of the plot), Shioli Kutsuna (Japanese space program worker Mitsuki Yamato), Golshifteh Farahani, and Firas Nassar are among the other cast members who have been confirmed for a return to the show as part of the renewal announcement (Aneesha and Ahmed Malik). Season 1 cast members Azhy Robertson and Tara Moyaedi (Luke and Sarah Malik), Daisuke Tsuji (Kaito Kawaguchi), and Billy Barratt (Casper Morrow) are also mentioned by name in the renewal announcement, in addition to Azhy Robertson and Tara Moyaedi.
Invasion Season 2 Plot
Unless the series decides to take a significant detour after the events of Season 1, it appears that the show intends to stick with its central premise of an alien invasion for the foreseeable future. In fact, writer and executive producer Simon Kinberg has essentially confirmed that this will be the case in the film. In response to the news of the show’s renewal, creator Steven Kinberg teased, “I’m super excited about what we’re planning for Season 2, expanding our universe in the most intimate and epic ways” (per Deadline).
It is clear that the minds behind “Invasion” are hard at work devising strategies to maintain the show’s unique blend of large-scale devastation and personal tragedies, while also refining the formula on both fronts. As a result, when “Invasion” Season 2 premieres (at least in the Apple TV+ universe), it may be one of the biggest and most visually impressive things to happen in the television world (or at least in the Apple TV+ universe).
