Early Life Details

Flavor Flav was born on March 16, 1959, in Roosevelt, New York, to William Jonathan Drayton, Jr. He was raised by his mother Anna, father William (who was the proprietor of a restaurant), brother Steven, and sister Jean in Freeport, New York. He taught himself to play the piano when he was five years old and went on to play the guitar and drums as a kid. Freeport High School was Drayton’s first choice for high school, but he dropped out in his junior year despite being active in the choir.

After setting his family’s house on fire while playing with a lighter as a toddler, he was imprisoned multiple times for breaking into and robbing stores as a teenager. He met Carlton Ridenhour (better known as Chuck D) at Adelphi University in Long Island, New York, in 1978, and began performing on his campus radio show. Drayton adopted the name Flavor Flav once they began rapping together.

Flavor Flav met Carlton Ridenhour, better known as Chuck D, while both were students at Adelphi University on Long Island. Flavor Flav adopted Chuck D’s stage name as a tribute to their shared love of graffiti and hip-hop.

Formed a hip-hop group named Public Enemy in Long Island in 1982, with the help of DJ Lord and Khari Wynn.

It was 1987 when Flavor Flav’s debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, hit the shelves. The political track Fight the Power published in 1989 contains harsh lyrics toward iconic American heroes such as Elvis Presley and John Wayne despite the group’s demand to rise up and fight injustice.
