Darby and the Dead Clip Ghost in Denial: Auli’i Cravalho

“Darby and the Dead”, the forthcoming film from 20th Century Fox and Hulu, has received a new teaser. Auli’i Cravalho plays Darby, a high school girl who can see the dead, while Riele Downs plays her adversary and ghostly problem. After Carvalho’s character, Capri, dies, the two continue to converse in the footage.

Darby is forcefully woken during the tape’s opening by Capri, with whom she rapidly discovers she does not get along. Capri is confident in her ability to bring Darby back to life because of her familiarity with her psychic abilities. Unfortunately, that is not how it works. Capri, predictably, refuses to assume responsibility for the issue. Darby breaks the fourth wall to draw attention to it, implying that it is not only something she experiences regularly but also watches the five stages of grieving play out in every person she helps. Capri’s emotional reaction to Darby’s repeated reassurance that she is, in fact, deceased is instead telling.

The clip, like the teaser, shows the interaction between Darby and Capri. Viewers already know that the two have a poor relationship before Capri’s death. Capri, it appears, will not make things easy for Darby, even in death. The clip shows that Capri will not immediately change her ways, especially after discovering her capacity to maintain an advantage. Darby, on the other hand, is sympathetic to Capri, and the two may find some common ground.
