High school

Maybin went to T.C. Roberson High School in Arden, North Carolina, where he played baseball in high school. His team won a state championship and he was voted the tournament’s most valuable player when he was a freshman. At the Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, New Mexico, Maybin earned the batting title and World Series MVP award. Ken Griffey Jr.’s coach, Joe Hayden, told him that he had “the same instincts in the outfield and at the plate” as Griffey Jr., who Hayden also coached in the Connie Mack division, an amateur baseball league for youngsters 18 and younger. Minor leagues
